Fmr Amb. Ford to Newsmax: US Troops in Syria Need to Come Out

Former Ambassador to Syria Robert Ford told Newsmax on Saturday that after nine years it is time for U.S. troops in the Middle East nation “to come out in a managed way.”

Last weekend, ousted Syrian leader Bashar Assad fled the country, seeking asylum in Russia from President Vladmir Putin. The collapse of the Assad regime opened the window for Israel to lay waste to what remained of the country’s military capabilities, yet President-elect Trump has stated the U.S. does not have major interests in Syria. Ford agreed saying, “he’s right about that.”

“This is more of a problem for Turkey, for Israel, for Jordan. But it’s also an opportunity for those countries. The United States does have an interest in seeing terrorist groups like Daesh contained, but it’s going to have to adjust its strategy in how to do that. And I think, frankly, American troops still in Syria after nine years, they need to come out in a managed way in coordination, particularly with Turkey and Iraq,” Ford said during an appearance on “America Right Now.”
